THE AUDIO TOOL
4. Select all tracks and mark in on the first frame after tone on the sequence side.
Make sure that you have no out point marked on the sequence side.
5. Splice in the filler. Everything in the sequence should have moved down another
30 seconds, and it remains in sync.
Now let’s talk about how you can create bars. To begin, you will need to import
a graphic file of SMPTE bars into a bin:
1. Click a bin of your choice, preferably the same bin where you created tone media.
2. Choose File > Import. Make sure that the File Type at the top of the menu is set
to Graphic Files. Be sure to set your import to the following options:
Option Set To
Aspect 601 non-square
Color levels 601
Field order Non-interlaced
Alpha Ignore (although there is no alpha channel,so you could skip this one)
3. Navigate to the Avid Free DV or Xpress Pro folder. Inside is a subfolder called
Supporting Files, which has a subfolder named Test Patterns. You will find a
SMPTE_Bars.pct file there. Select and import it. The navigational path is Free DV
or Xpress\Supporting Files\Test Patterns\SMPTE_Bars.pct. If you’re doing a
PAL project, go to the PAL folder and select
colorbars.pct; if you want 100%
brightness bars, select
colorbars_100pct.pct.
4. Import this .pct file into the bin by selecting it and choosing OK.
5. From there, you can load the color bars into the Source side and edit it in at the
beginning of the tone media. The length should be the same as the tone media:
one minute.
Figure 4.20 shows a Timeline of how I edit color bars into my sequences, with
the beginning timecode noted.
