THE AVID PRODUCT LINE
As a result, Avid systems were broadcast-ready. New resolutions reflecting these
changes were developed. Avid named them AVR 75 and AVR 77, the “7” indicating
that the horizontal picture was 720 pixels wide and thus suitable for broadcast.
During this time, things were developing at Apple as well. Apple stopped selling
the five-PCI-slot computers and adapted a three-slot system (see Figure 1.5). Having
only three slots made it difficult for Avid to continue development of its systems because
of the four-slot requirement for all its coprocessors.
I had supposed that this could cause a falling out between Apple and Avid, but
one is never sure what happens behind the closed doors of two separate corporations.
Suffice it to say, Avid used an external PCI expansion chassis for use with the newer
Apple systems and it worked. But every new piece of hardware had to be developed.
The result was less than elegant, but it worked.
I remember approaching an Apple executive at that time. He told me that the
newer systems with fewer cards were created because Apple believed that video editing
could be contained within the computer itself instead of using so many coprocessors.
He was right. A year later, Apple introduced Final Cut Pro.
During this time, Avid began serious development on a PC as well as Mac Media
Composer. The results provided a larger user base, and the systems were identical.
Meridien Avids
Avid’s next incarnation of technology was the Meridien subsystem (see Figure 1.6). The
Meridien systems are still wildly popular and in use today. Avid changed its resolution
names to reflect the industry standard in terms of ratios rather than Avid-specific names.
For example, 10:1 resolution is truly 1/10 of uncompressed resolution. 1:1 resolution
is uncompressed resolution, and so on. Meridiens were the first uncompressed video
solution for Avid. The Avid Symphony, with a full set of finishing tools, including color
correction, 3D effects, and uncompressed video, was created. Media Composers also
had many of these options. Real-time playback of two streams of uncompressed video
was made possible. It was an exciting time for Avid and Avid users.
